I changed my Volvo’s coolant in Oct 2021 when I first bought the car, but in between the tank has been flushed or emptied due to several services done to the engine.
Recently, when looking into the fluid in the radiator, it looks yellowish, as if it is just rusty water inside. Hence, I plan to change the coolant in the radiator again.
I studied again the type of coolant available and which one is suitable for my car, and found out that there are IAT and OAT collants.
IAT (Inorganic Acid Technology)
- Contains either ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, and is generally green or blue in colour. This is the traditional coolant that is used by most classic vehicles.
OAT (Organic Acid Technology)
- Organic additive technology (OAT) coolant contains only organic corrosion inhibitors such as carboxylates and triazole. Normally designed for newer vehicles that contain more nylon or aluminium parts in them. Normally is red in colour.
Since my Volvo is still using the original copper or brass radiator, hence the suitable coolant for it should be IAT type. Alert…the previous coolant that I bought and used in 2021 although is blue in colour, but they are NOT IAT coolant but OAT coolant.
Searching around again and this time I found the one below: Mannol AG 11 Antifreeze. Cost me RM60 for 5L bottle. Will change the coolant in my Volvo once I got it. Thinking of DIY this time.
