Jaguar MK 2 Dream Comes True!

I started looking for a Jaguar MK 2 since 17th May 2023. Almost a year of search. I posted a LOOK FOR Jaguar MK 2 post in Facebook Jaguar Drivers Malaysia group, and there is little to no response.

Actually, I did managed to get in touch with a seller in Selangor, but his car is not in running condition, and requires some work to be done. Looks rough from the photos, and might be very rusty. I wasn’t very familiar with the Jag, so decided not to go for it. He was asking RM80k+ for the car.

The next Jaguar MK 2 that I saw for sale is by a car dealer in Selangor. Asking price was RM168,800. Quite on the high side for me to pay. So was just a browse browse deal.

Then the third unit that I almost closed the deal was a seller from Sabah that I saw adversied in Mudah.my. It was a very very close deal, but didn’t materialized.

Since missing out the deal in Sabah, my search of the Jaguar MK 2 continues.

I contacted the previous owner of my Volvo P1800 who owns a Jaguar MK 2 as well. He is selling his unit, but with rusts at the bottom of the doors. However, the deal breaker is that his unit is an automatic. I want a manual for my personal car, especially a classic. His car condition looks decent, especially the interior. He wanted RM138k for it, which is on the high side of what I am willing to spend, especially after missing the Sabah deal at RM108k. RJ20 number plate is not included with the car of course.

Jaguar vs Volvo?

I was contemplating between a Volvo 122 and a Jaguar MK 2. A good friend told me that a Jaguar looks much more elegant than a Volvo 122, so that set my mind to get a Mark 2 instead of a Volvo 122. I was previously comparing a Jaguar MK 2 at RM100k vs a Volvo 122 two door coupe at RM100k, same price which one to choose? I prefer a 2 door coupe than a sedan, but the 4 doors Jag makes it a perfect wedding car for my children in the future. If there is a good deal of a 122 two doors, I will grab one, but not at RM100k. Between a 4 door Volvo 122 vs a Jaguar MK 2, this is a no brainer. Jag for sure. Volvo 122 four doors version is fairly cheap in Malaysia, can be bought at around RM40-50k for a restored unit, or RM20k-30k for a fairly used original unit. With limited real estate in my house, I can only squeeze one more in, and it should be something worth keeping.

Facebook Ads

Last week, I saw an ads in Facebook, a seller name Ralph Liew posted a Jaguar MK 2 together with another two cars for sale. I didn’t contacted the seller right away, but I did saved his phone number. I didn’t contact him immediately, and forgot about it till few days later.

I wanted to whatsapp the seller but his phone doesn’t appear to have whatsapp. So I send him a message via FB Messenger asking about the price. He replied at RM50k, which immediately screamed SCAMMER to me. RM50k for a Jaguar MK 2? How crazy is that? My friend Lua said that’s a TAKE MY MONEY NOW price.

Anyhow, I asked the seller for date and time to meet up. I was expecting him to ask me to pay a deposit, which is what scammer usually do. A few days later, he said can meet up the next day. He even gave me the exact time and location, and never ask for a deposit still. Now that’s something weird. Could that be a REAL DEAL? But at RM50k?

I contacted my Facebook friend in KL, who is an avid car reviewer and collector, Lua Bo Feng. He owns a Jaguar MK 2 too, so he knows inside out of the car. He offered to help me checkout the car, which is a blessings to me as he knew more than what I can find out if I were to check out the car myself.

So, I arranged the time for Lua and Liew to meet up at 1.30pm yesterday. I wished I was there to see the car myself, but Lua helped to record a video for me, which is great!

Got a call from Lua explaining about the car condition to me. The owner, Liew, owned a car restoration workshop before, so he was actually restoring the Jaguar himself midway, but project abandoned due to problem with the paint shop that didn’t finish the work and most trims and parts have been removed. So it is a project car now. However, he said all parts are complete. There is no cancerous rust on the car, and welding has been done at certain area as per Lua.

RM50k for a Jaguar MK 2 with complete parts still sounds like a steal to me! It also comes with a nice BM2898 classic number plate. According to Mr Liew, the car only has 2 owners, and he is the 2nd owner. I don’t want to miss this deal, as I think it would be hard to come by a better and cheaper Jaguar MK 2 in the future, which Lua agreed (he has been in the classic car market for long).

I called Mr Liew and try negotiate the price a little bit with him, but he is firmed. So, we agree a deal at RM50k and I paid RM5k deposit to him to secure the deal.

Can’t wait to see the car in person soon! Meanwhile I checked Facebook and found a photo of the car took in 2023.

God’s Timing

Previously when I missed the deal in Sabah, I felt kinda regret and keep dreaming of the car. However, I do believe that God has the best timing and gift waiting for me. Dream comes true for this one! I thank God for the best deal and timing! RM50k is a comfortable figure for me to stretch my car repairing skill and hobby.

13th May 2024

Got the car registration certificate from the owner. Very old style type from the 80s.

16th May 2024

Puspakom mobile inspection schedule was full for the month of May. So the seller can only make early booking in June 2024. Hope he will get the booking schedule soon. According to my Johor Puspakom runner, online booking will only open on the 20th of each month. So need to make booking early on that day to grab a date.

I asked the owner for more photos of the car, and he kindly took some and share with me. Love the moto-lita steering wheel.

Using Topaz Photo Ai, I was able to increase the file resolutions to much higher quality. Some dark photos was brighten up using Corel Paint Shop Pro.

Update 08 June 2024

The owner has collected the door cards and some carpets from the upholstery shop. Carpets look incomplete. Nevermind, will figure out when I got the car. Not expecting full set.
