Recently, the gearbox of my Toyota Alphard has been giving me some annoying humming sound headache. When driving faster, the sound becomes louder. It is so annoying that once you noticed it, it won’t go away.
I sent the car to a tyre shop for alignment, and they said the the hub of the wheel that got problem. I have the hub changed at a nearby workshop, but the humming noise still presents. So it is NOT the wheel hub problem. Wasted RM500+ for the work.
However, the mechanic did identify that the problem should be from the gearbox. However, he is not very confident in that, and said need to remove the gearbox for others to service.
I then asked another workshop that service my Volvo. The young man said he has done that before, repairing the gearbox. So I have more confident in him and sent my car to him to get the gearbox sorted. It took a week+ to get the work done.
Above are what he has changed. Ignore the top left. Basically there are 4 bearings, front and rear seals and a rubber o-ring.
Total cost me RM4,245. More than what I was expecting, but better than having to change car.
Below are the breakdown of the cost.
Parts are not so expensive, but labour intensive.
He did wheels alignment after the work as shaft was removed during the work. I test driven the car in the past few days, no more annoying humming sound and I am enjoy driving the car again. Money well spent to rectify the problem.
