My First Bike Trainer – CycleOps Hammer Direct Drive Trainer

My Giant bike is coming…has been waiting and anticipating it everyday.

At the mean time, I am shopping for accessories and items to go with my new cycling hobby. Bike stand, lighting, pants, jersey…etc.

I bought a China bike stand previously, but my friend commented that it will spoil the rim. So I went to look for another unit…and chanced upon this in the used market.

Minoura DS-532-600L Compact, folding bike stand. New is around RM180, I paid RM90 for it.

Condition is around 85% new. Upper holder is a bit loose, but easily tighten with a hex key. It is actually of very neat design. Looks solid and

  • Features
    • Keeps rear wheel off the ground.
    • Hook height and angle is infinitely adjustable.
    • Works with small wheel bikes up to 29’er MTB
    • The stand and alloy pillar are foldable and locks for compact storage.

Then, I was thinking that I won’t be able to cycle daily outdoor, so I should get a bike trainer to cycle at home.

I first learnt about the bike trainer when a friend want to sell me his Cannondale CAAD 12 and free the bike trainer. Looks pretty interesting. It is the ELITE CUBO.

Selling at around RM900+ new. My friend said he is not using it. I didn’t get the bike from him (as the size is too small for me), so I didn’t get the bike trainer as well.

Then another friend of mine said he saw a good deal of bike trainer offered by Trek Singapore.

This is one of the top trainer in the market, Cycleops, and the model he wanted to get is the Hammer, top model. Definitely too much for me as a beginner. But the interesting part is that he planned to sell his old trainer, the TACX Vortex.

This is another level UP from the Elite Qubo trainer above. Comes with bluetooth connection. Retails around RM2k+. He wanted to let go at SGD250, which I think is a good deal. But later he changed his mind and decided to keep the Tacx first (he said might sell later, but not sure), so I have no options left.

He was in Singapore buying the CycleOps trainer yesterday, it is a good deal as normal price is above RM4k. Promotion is till 31st Aug 2018, so I can either get it now or don’t get later (definitely would be insane to pay full price later when promo is over). After some consideration, I told him to get one for me as well. Yeah, big burn on the pocket, but OK lah…get once, get the best that I can afford.

My friend tested this trainer in Singapore. Weight 21kg, very stable when put on floor. My friend said it is very similar to actual road feel.

Now…waiting for my bike to arrive then only I can test out this trainer! Can’t wait!
