After a long long consideration…I have finally pushed the BUY button. Trust me, I have been on Apple iMac page for thousand times…(OK, don’t trust that figure…but many times for sure), just to review the BEST iMac configuration that I want.
No, no iMac 21.5″. Forget about that tiny monitor. The main reason why I go for an iMac is because of the monitor, the 27″ 5K monitor. I believed it is made by LG (surprised that LG made such good monitor), and if I were to purchase a 5K LG monitor, it would have cost me RM6k+ alone. Even a Dell 32″ 5K monitor would have set back me RM5k+.
A powerful DIY PC that I built for my wife in May 2017 already cost me RM5k+. So if you added a 5K monitor, total cost exit RM10k already. This makes iMac quite good value for money actually.
There are 3 models of 27-inch iMac for you to choose from.
I was initially targeting the basic RM 7,999.00 model, then played around with the RM 8,899.00 model…and finally the iMac I chose is the RM 10,099.00 model.
The difference of between these models are mainly the processor and display card. I opt for Intel i7 and the best AMD Radeon Pro 580 display card. I did not upgrade the RAM as it is way too pricey buying RAM from Apple than outside. RAM can be easily self-install later, there is a cover behind iMac that you can pop open to install the RAM yourself. From 8GB to 16GB upgrade, Apple charges RM920. I can purchase a 8GB RAM outside and install it myself at only RM378 (Crucial – 8GB DDR4 2400 MHz SO-DIMM Memory Module @ US$89.95).
I don’t trust normal HDD nowadays, and I don’t remember using up all the 256GB space in my computer SSD drive (Windows). So I opt for the 512GB SSD instead of 2TB Fusion Drive. That’s a RM920 extra upgrade and is definitely worth spending (you can’t change the hard disk yourself later). I plan to use this iMac for at least 5 years, so the hard disk better last…and SSD should be more reliable than HDD.
Mouse or Trackpad
The last DIY config that I chose is a Trackpad instead of Mouse. The Apple Magic Trackpad 2 looks cool, so I would like to try it out. I can get a Logitech mouse anytime (I even have a few new Logitech mouse as spare).
Below is the iMac that I ordered (RM 11,075.00)
- 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display
With the following configuration:
4.2GHz quad-core 7th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz
8GB 2400MHz DDR4
512GB SSD
Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB video memory
Magic Trackpad 2
Magic Keyboard – US English
Accessory Kit
I messaged Apple customer service today to asked about GST and TAX Invoice issue. Aaron assured me that the price shown at Apple website is FINAL and there will be no extra charge of GST or etc.
So, confidentally I placed my order just now. Delivery date is between 21/12/2017 – 26/12/2017, as customised iMac is done in China and ship from China.
Now I just have to wait patiently for my Christmas gift to arrive!
