I saw many people using this phrase nowadays…
“I am who I am”
Do you know where is the origin of this phrase?
Who is the first or only qualified person for this phrase?
English lesson… 😛
“I am who I am”
… are you still who are you like yesterday? Or seconds ago? Or last year?
In English, we see there are past tense, present tense and future tense. Why? Because we human are bounded by time. We are no longer the same we seconds ago. We changed, all the time.
So…can you guess who is the only one that qualified for the above phrase?
Yes, God. The almighty God and created heaven and earth, and created sky and land, that created time and not bounded by time.
Yes, this phrase first appear in the Bible, in Exodus 3:14, when Moses asked God’s name.
Original phrase = “I am that I am”
King James Version
Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Only God has the right to use that phrase, so next time if you want to write who you are again…think about the powerful or true meaning of the phrase. 🙂
According to your argument, its already the past the moment we refer to the present, yes?
Sounds weird.
Its like saying: I was typing in english. Technically, I’m typing now. By the time I finish typing a comment addressing to you, i’m no longer typing even though my fingers are moving as I type. So, I was typing in english now.
Doesn’t make much sense to me… (i mean, both your argument and the things i typed)
I mean…
it should be “I am typing in english” instead of “I was typing in english”, yes?
Hi 3POINT8,
Your argument is valid, because you typed in English and that is a fact that doesn’t change with time. After an hour, a few days…or even thousand years, what you have typed are still English, it will not change and is not bounded by time.
However, when you said “I am who I am”, this is NOT CORRECT. Why? Because you changed. Your hair grows longer, your skin grows older, your body changes. So, you are no longer who you are a second ago.
Hope this clears the doubt. 🙂
