I found a Germ! A Prescious! Photo Clam Ballhead PC-33NS Review!

Posted on March 7th, 2010 by KhoKing.
Categories: Photography.

I found one…then I found a bunch! I found Photo Clam, then a series of professional ballhead!

Photo Clam - A name not to be forgotten in the photography industry. They create ballheads, GREAT ballheads! They are new, started in year 2007, but quickly gained their good name and reputation in the internet due to their product quality.

Know the Naming System

Photo Clam use ball diameter as the model naming / number of their ballhead. Photo Clam PC-33NS means that it has 33mm diameter ball, PC-36NS means it has 36mm diameter ball, PC-54NS means that it has 54mm diameter ball. I find this naming system to be very easy to remember and easy to differentiate the size and capability of each ballhead, since Photo Clam has quite a wide range. Some ballhead has same load capacity, but if the ball is bigger than the other, then it will have smoother operation when a same load is being carried.

N or NS?

You might notice that some Photo Clam ballheads have N ending at the model name, while some have NS ending at the model name. The difference / meaning is simple. The NS means with spirit level built in, while N has no spirit level built in. ShaShinKi imports all Photo Clam ballheads with spirit level built in (except PC-33N which there is only one offering without spirit level by Photo Clam).

Arca Swiss Quick Release System

All Photo Clam ballheads use Arca Swiss Quick Release System in the ballheads design. This is the professional preferred system due to the security it offers. All Photo Clam ballheads have safety pin on the Arca Swiss QR system, to prevent the quick release (QR) plate from being fall off accidentally. The safety pin can catch and stop the plate from sliding out in both direction.

kkk_7360.JPG

In the picture above, I have actually loosen up the knob of the clamp, and the plate stop sliding forward and caught by the safety pin.

Below below shows an QR plate attached to the bottom of a camera.

img_7336.JPG

This is a general purpose plate, Photo Clam PC-52-UP2, which can be used for camera or lenses. The good thing about the design of Photo Clam plate is that the screw has a coin accessible thread, which can be used to lock and unlock the plate easily! The plate attached firmly to the camera once locked.

There are two dovetails on Photo Clam plates, which can be used as hole for hand strap to tie over it. Handy!

img_7335.JPG

Photo Clam PC-52-UP2 has 4 pieces of rubber on the plate, making sure that the plate does not rotate once tighten.

http://shashinki.com/shop/images/PC-52-UP2.jpg

Photo Clam PC-36NS

kkk_7353.JPG

I took a Photo Clam PC-36NS ballhead for reviewing. It is the middle size in Photo Clam ballhead series (smallest ballhead is PC30N, biggest is PC-74NS), which is a very popular model.

the Size?

A ballhead that is able to withstand 30kg load…Let’s see the size of the PC-36NS sitting next to a Canon EOS 40D camera.

kkk_7355.JPG

Smaller than the size of my palm.

Using it?

I am not sure if there is a black and white manual telling one how to use a ballhead. Not that I have read any, but below is how I prefer to put my ballhead as.

img_7331.JPG

Plate knob underneath the camera on the right, while ballhead lock / unlock knob on the left. Pan lock knob pointing towards the photographer. With this orientation, I can have my right hand on the camera, composing the camera and finger ready to press the shutter release, while my left hand on the lock / unlocking knob.

Some might prefer the following orientation, no right or wrong I guess, just your own preference.

kkk_7358.JPG

Friction Control

Notice a little tiny screw on the big locking knob in the ballhead (photo below)? That is friction control Friction control on Photo Clam PC-36NS ballhead allows adjustment of the “tightness” of the ball even when the locking knob of the ballhead is set to loose (Zero on the red marking). Photo Clam use a highly visible red labeling for their friction control marking, which is definitely a thoughtful design. What’s the marking for you may asked. Personally I find it handy as if I knew that I can lock my Canon EOS 40D with 18-55mm lens at turning till 5 marking, then I don’t have to turn till 7 every time. If I knew that an EOS 40D with 70-200mm F2.8 lens would need to turn to 8 to lock it tight, then I won’t turn till 5 and stop there. Different practice for different people, some might not even look at the numbers…but I think it is good to have rather than missing it. :P

kkk_7356.JPG

When a heavier load is being carried, friction control will allow precise adjustment to ensure that the ball does not loose up too much (dropped) or too tight.

Panning Base

There is a separate screw that is being used to lock / unlock the panning base of Photo Clam ballhead. Photo Clam call it Panning-fix knob.

kkk_7357.JPG

Once locked, the base will not move. It locks securely and firmly. This is extremely useful especially when you lock your equipment onto the ballhead and carry the whole system on tripod over your shoulder. You would not want the panning base to loosen up and turn, causing your equipment to hit something. Kudos to Photo Clam for creating a secure panning base.

Spirit Level

I have seen many ballhead makers put a spirit level on the top of the quick release system, which I find inconvenient to use. Once your camera or lens is on the QR system, you can’t see the spirit level anymore. Again another thoughtful design of Photo Clam to put the spirit levels (yes, s because it is plural with 2 spirit levels) at the side of the Arca Swiss Quick Release System.

The Ball?!

This should be one of the most important part in a ballhead. The BALL!

There is NO OIL on Photo Clam ball. Yes, oil free and no greasy thingy on your fingers when you accidentally touched it. I didn’t get the technical data of Photo Clam technology, but I believe they use Teflon coating on the ball or / and the housing to ensure smooth while still oil free operation. You won’t believe how smooth it is until you have tried one.

kkk_7359.JPG

See the ball above! Matted colour ball with no oil, not a single drop. (Warning: Do not outsmart and drop oil onto the ball!)

Conclusions

There are similar quality products in the market, but is either too expensive or / and with some weakness. Photo Clam, being the latest professional ballhead in the market, founder who is a photographer himself, created Photo Clam to offer professional quality ballhead to the general consumer to be able to enjoy the fun of tripod + ballhead photography without breaking the bank!

If you have not tried one, loan one from your friend! If you have not owned one…what are you waiting for?! :D

Where to buy?

Where else? Your online camera shop! ShaShinKi is the distributor of Photo Clam in Malaysia, bringing Photo Clam directly to you at an affordable price! :)

Passover at ShaShinKi

Posted on March 29th, 2009 by KhoKing.
Categories: Church, Photography.

Passover is one of the most important incident for all who believes in God. Christians believe the old testament in the Bible as well, how God saves His people from Egypt.

Passover 2009 is from 8th ~ 16th April 2009. To remember this season, I have designed an unique banner for ShaShinKi logo. It has been a long time that I did not do this festival / season logo design. Thank God, I got the simple idea to just paint the blood over the door of ShaShinKi, in remembrance of the Bible teaching. Personally I quite like this design, simple but delivering the message clearly.

shashinki-logo-700.gif

In Bible:

PASSOVER
Exodus 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: Exodus 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth [14th] day of the same month [Nisan 14]: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening [of Nisan 14]. Exodus 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. Exodus  12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night [Nisan 14], and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD. Exodus 12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt. Exodus 12:14 And this day [Nisan 14] shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

Thank God for the salvation, thank God for his almighty.

Moved Server Data - USA to Malaysia (Over 11GB!)

Posted on March 3rd, 2009 by KhoKing.
Categories: Computer / IT.

Last week has been a hectic week for me. The recent slow internet connection of Streamyx to oversea server (especially US servers) has brought forward my plan of migrating the data of my USA server back to Malaysia.

There were over 11GB of data that needs to be transferred, for ShaShinKi.com alone. With the slow internet connections, it is quite impossible for me to use FTP or even SSH to do the data transfer via Streamyx line.

With the assistance from my Malaysia server provider (www.ipserverone.com), all ShaShinKi data was migrated successfully! Lee and Lee (Kenji) from IPServerOne have been of great help, assisting without asking for a cent! I have a dedicated server with them, but that does not warrant this kind of support from them. They do it volunteeringly, which really touches my heart. My server provider in USA on the other hand is money minded. Unmanaged server. Server rental cost has increased for at least 2 times, over 50% increment in the last 3 years. I can get a Intel Xeon powered server with RAID setting from IPServerOne for the money I paid to my US server provider.

Did I mention how fast is the server I have with IPServerOne now? Yes, VERY FAST! Accessing files on my server is like accessing files on my local hard drive (Ok, maybe a little slower). This is miles improvement as comparing to accessing my files on my USA server. My e-commerce site (http://shashinki.com) now flies! Yes, even on the slowmix line!

Photo / picture loading time has been extremely fast and smooth as well. I am glad that I have made the migration earlier, though the USA server I have paid the rental till Oct 2009 (can’t get back the money), but still it is better for me to move now than later.

I still have some of my sites in my USA server, eg. PentaxWorld.com. As that is an international site with members mostly from oversea, so I think it is better for us to continue having it on my USA server than moving it to Malaysia. Perhaps after Oct 2009, before the next bill of my USA server.

Hope you enjoy the fast loading speed of ShaShinKi.com! ;)

Initially it is just a plain .png file. Later I changed it to jpeg for better web compatibility, later I decided to add some snow animation to it…

Here’s the final version:

File size is 160kb, I hope it is not of too much burden for Malaysia internet speed to load… :)

ShaShinKi.com Design Version 2

Posted on April 22nd, 2008 by KhoKing.
Categories: Computer / IT, Photography.

I have again spent my last weekend in updating the design of ShaShinKi.com, trying to give a more advance and elegant look to it.

The homepage or door to ShaShinKi.com store is still the same. The major changes is the shop part.

shashinki-home.jpg

In my initial design theme, the main colour is black, with gradient grey and white. My wife said that it is not so good to make the website looks so dark, so I change the background to something more refreshing, but not too bright or unfriendly for the eyes.

I chose red as the main colour of the background, not the bright eye piercing red but dark elegant red. I want the feel of big curtain in an orchestra hall, presenting the store of ShaShinKi.com to the world. :)

Here’s a thumbnail view of the site:

shashinki-v2-april-2008.jpg

Besides the background, I have also changed the infobox bar colour to something more 3D and also enlarging the font so that it can be read easier.

New Product Page Design at ShaShinKi.com

Posted on April 14th, 2008 by KhoKing.
Categories: Computer / IT, Photography.

I spent the last weekend in redesigning the product page at ShaShinKi.com, I am pretty happy and satisfied with the results…so here to share with you all my excitement. :D
I have always wanted to make the product page more user friendly, clearer and easier to browse. With my limited knowledge in php, I have to spend extra time to try and error.:P

Here’s the results:

ssk-newproductpage-design.jpg

What are the changes?

1. Product image has moved from right to left.

2. Bigger product image (250 x 250px) now, give clearly view of the product.

3. Clear listing of Brand, Category, Model #, Stock Status, Price and Quantity selection.

4. For product/s with Option, it will be shown below the Price before Quantity.

5. Boxed Picture. Personally I find this makes the image neater to show.

6. Brand name Clickable, to browse products under the same brand.

7. Added a title bar “Product” to the right column of the product page.

I hope this gives a better shopping experience to my customers at ShaShinKi.com. You can see the actual product page in action at:

http://shashinki.com/shop/nikon-full-frame-digital-12mp-live-view-9fps-p-1167.html

Digital Camera Focus Accuracy Test Method - INDEPTH FOCUS TEST

Posted on March 20th, 2008 by KhoKing.
Categories: Photography.

After testing over hundreds of lenses…I have come out with a focus test method that I felt is most convincing to myself. I call it:

INDEPTH FOCUS TEST

There are many focus test chart flying around in the internet, I have printed out some and test them using my Nikon D200 DSLR. However, I found those test chart to be NOT ACCURATE, as it mainly influenced by the position and accuracy of the focus sensor of your DSLR. Some DSLR tends to focus on the subject that is of higher contrast or nearer to the sensor. Some differs.

In order to eliminate the camera focusing sensor position “error”, I developed the INDEPTH Focus Test method, there the camera focus sensor will have no problem in locking focus onto the target, and can give accurate focus photo for evaluation.

Below is how I tested lenses that I ordered for my customers at ShaShinKi.com.

Put two cards (with wordings, eg. namecard, so that you can check sharpness of the wordings later) on your table, one with a lens cap at the bottom so that it is around 1cm higher than the other. Focus on the lower card and take a shot (make sure your shutter speed is above 1/200s, or use flash to freeze motion). Take another shot with focus on the upper card.

Distance between card is around 5mm, separated by a lens cap.

img_0011.JPG

When you focus on Card A, Card B should be blurred (out of focus).

When you focused on Card B, Card A should be blurred (out of focus).

Check the sharpness of both shots. It should show sharp on your focused card and blur on the opposite one. Same as the second shot.

Repeat the above test at different focal length if your lens is a zoom.

After the close distance test, try take a few shots at infinity or far distance. Again, choose a subject which have some clear wordings on it so that you can check the sharpness and clarity on your camera LCD screen later.

If your lens is good, all should be sharp. :)

(Updated on 20th March 2008 with picture. A picture is worth a thousand words…)

Toshiba quits HD-DVD

Posted on February 20th, 2008 by KhoKing.
Categories: Computer / IT.

Yes…this might be the hottest news in the technology world recently. Toshiba has announced that they are officially quiting the HD-DVD format, leaving few others players behind.

hd-dvd.jpg

In case you are wondering…this it the world for the next generation high storage DVD format, between HD DVD and Blu-Ray (Sony).

Toshiba’s HD DVD is backed by Paramount, Universal Pictures, Microsoft, Sanyo, and NEC.

Sony’s Blu-ray is backed by Disney, 20th Century Fox, MGM, Dell, Panasonic, and Philips.

In Japan, the TV news even conduct a very comprehensive war analysis between the two formats…but my memory not so good to remember all. In summary, Sony Blu-Ray seems to have more promising future, with HD DVD dying slowly. PlayStation 3 is definitely playing big help in promoting Blu-Ray format.

You can read CNN news on Toshiba quiting the HD DVD format at:

Here’s one that I enjoy just now for my dinner… :D

What is it? It probably has become shit now :P …but let me tell you…it is delicious sweet and sour fried bone meat. There are some potato wedges in the sweat and sour sos, very delicious. We did not mix the meat with the sos, as it will kill the crispiness of the meat. When serving, dip the meat into the sos and consume it. Yummy!

I will let my wife explain more in future…now need to go do some “business”… ;)

Statistics

I installed WordPress.com Stats few weeks ago, it is an official blog statistics software by Wordpress, which I find it easy to install and use.

It is good to know how busy or popular your blog is, by studying the statistics.

Here’s the statistic of my blog for the last one week…average around 100 visitors per day…hmm…quite low. :P Anyway, that’s not my purpose of blogging (just want to have a place to release some of my thought from the little brain).

I got quite addicted to blog recently…thinking of starting a forum to discuss about blog (installing, features sharing, promoting…etc.). However, no time for it at the moment…and the burden is going to be quite a lot maintaining a site…so let’s keep it aside first. :P

(Got another project in mind at the moment…)
