Why Google Adsense is BETTER?!

Posted by KhoKing on Wednesday Jul 25, 2007 Under Computer / IT

Google, being the biggest and most popular search engine in the market nowadays, is also the first company that introduce text ads to all online users to generate money on their sites.

Google Adsense, which can be seen EVERYWHERE, as everybody is joining the $$$ wagon trying to get money from the internet. Some can generate more than US$1k a month…or even US$10k a month!

Few years after Adsense introduction, many companies start offering similar type of ads to publishers and advertisers. However, the market is already dominated by Google Adsense…so it is hard for others to shaken the base. Internet nowadays is first come first won. If you got the new idea and is the first one to implement it…most likely you will be the KING or winner in the market. Youtube being a good example, though Google has its own Google Video, but still Youtube is more popular and Google has chosen to buy out Youtube at US$1.6 billions (Youtube was still less than 2 years old by then).

Now, back to Adsense. Why is Adsense better and still the preferred ads by most? Here’s my personal experience and opinion:

1. Google being a search engine knows more about your site than others. They send relevant ads to your site which are most appropriate and match the content of your site better.

2. Google doesn’t allow inappropriate ads to be shown. There is no gambling ads, no porn ads, no sexuality ads…etc. You can be sure that your ads and site are still being as healthy as before.

3. Speed. Adsense load up time is MUCH MUCH faster than some other small company ads that I have tried (bidvertisers and adbrite). There is almost no delay when I put Adsense on my site. All contents still loads up smoothly. However, when I activated bidvertisers or Adbrite ads, there is a significant few seconds delay to have the ads shown before other contents on the site are being load up. This has forced me to put Bidvertisers and Adbrite ads on the last content to be load up on my site, so that visitors and members will not felt that my site is slow. See: http://pentaxworld.com

4. Easy to use. Adsense is very easy to setup and use. I can get my ads running in less than a minute, though signing up a new account requires a day or two for approval process. Configuring the right ads for your site is also very very easy. You can customize the colours with just a click of a few buttons to match your site perfectly. The new Google Ads appearance is also attractive, adds quality to your sites. :)

5. Google Adsense now offer image ads. This is nice…adds colours to your site.

6. Biggest Ads company. Google Adsense being the biggest ads company guarantee that you will receive constants ads and advertisers on your site, and you will get pay by Google for sure.

7. One account, rule them all. You can use your existing Gmail account for Adsense, no need to sign up or remember password/email of another account. There are many other Google service as well, which you can use the same account and rule them all!

That’s all for the sharing from me for now…hope this article will be helpful/useful to you.

(DO NOT CLICK ON YOUR OWN ADS…don’t ever try or think about it!)

My prefered Photo SlideShow Program

Posted by KhoKing on Tuesday Jun 5, 2007 Under Computer / IT, Photography

ProShow Gold

I was still using the old version. It changes photos into slideshow with great effect! You can add music, slide transition…etc. You can save your output file to VCD, DVD, EXE…etc. I am not sure how good other programs are out there, but ProShow Gold has proven to be very useful to me and definitely my choice of slideshow creation program.

The latest version of ProShow Gold has gone 3.0. Should have many new features added, and price is only US$69.95 (downloadable). Nah…I am not getting anything from Photodex for promoting this program for them, but just happened to have a photographer member asking me about slideshow program, so I thought I just share in my blog as well.

TMnet offering 4MB/s package! First and Only in Malaysia!

Posted by KhoKing on Friday May 18, 2007 Under Computer / IT

I read about the news of TMnet now offering 4MB/s Streamyx package with an “introductory” price of RM198/month.

This is definitely a good news for Malaysians, with internet speed become faster and faster.

This is good for me as well, as if people are able to get online faster, speedier and easier, it will make shopping online at ShaShinKi.com a more pleasant experience!

However…now the not so good feedback…

I posted this news at PhotoMalaysia, and many members are complaining about the service of Streamyx. Their current 512KB and 1MB plans are crappy, not delivering the speed as stated. My sister in law in Perak is often having Streamyx down (1~3 times a month), and repair work normally take a few days. Refund? Yeah…if you do bother to write them a letter, wait for a few months…then they might compensate you for a few days discount of what you are paying monthly. I bet most will not bother to do that…and Streamyx is not loosing money by NOT DELIVERING their service.

So, people do not trust the 4MB/s package now…Streamyx should improve their current service (512KB/s and 1MB/s), instead of offering higher package to new customers. Or is Streamyx purposely reducing the speed of the current 512KB/s and 1MB/s performance to give way to the 4MB/s customers? Can their current infrastructure support and deliver 4MB/s speed?

I do hope internet service in Malaysia can improve significantly…hopefully more players can join in the ISP market (celcom, maxis…etc.).

Amazon.com acquires dpreview.com

Posted by KhoKing on Tuesday May 15, 2007 Under Computer / IT, Photography

Today’s biggest news in the photography world: Amazon.com acquires dpreview.com!

I was quite surprised when I visited dpreview.com today and saw that headline news! Wow…how much did Amazon paid to Phil Askey? With millions of visitors and registered members, dpreview.com definitely worth a few million dollars! Very envy… :D

Here’s the official press release (I posted this at PentaxWorld.com as well):

AMAZON.COM ACQUIRES DPREVIEW.COM
THE LEADING ONLINE DESTINATION FOR REVIEWS
AND INFORMATION ABOUT DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

(BUSINESS WIRE) SEATTLE, WA—May 14, 2007—Leading online retailer Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced it has acquired www.dpreview.com, the web’s most comprehensive site for digital camera information and reviews. Founded in 1998 by Phil Askey, dpreview.com provides unbiased reviews and original content regarding the latest in digital cameras, and offers a host of features and forums designed to make it easy for consumers to find the camera that’s right for them. With its unique voice and in-depth technical reviews, dpreview.com draws millions of unique visitors each month.

“Dpreview.com is by far the most authoritative source anywhere for straight talk about new digital cameras,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “We at Amazon.com have been their fans for a long time, and we extend a big welcome to the dpreview.com team.”

“One of the difficulties of operating dpreview.com independently has been the balance between producing content and delivering new site features,” said Phil Askey, founder of dpreview.com. “Now, with the support of Amazon, I’ll be able to devote more of my time to expanding and improving our features – such as product reviews and discussion forums while still delivering the high-quality content that our readers have come to expect.”

Dpreview.com offers in-depth reviews of the latest digital cameras and accessories, active discussion forums, digital photography and imaging news, sample images, a dynamic digital camera buyers’ guide, side-by-side comparisons of the most popular models, and the web’s most comprehensive database of digital camera features and specifications.

Dpreview.com will continue to function as a stand-alone operation based in London.

After a day with ReviewPost…

Posted by KhoKing on Monday May 14, 2007 Under Computer / IT, Photography

Below are what I posted at Simple Machines forum, I think it would be useful for my future reference as well as to my visitors, so I copy and paste it here to share with you guys. :)

This article is all about having a review system on your website, here’s how it is in action:

http://pentaxworld.com/reviews/

http://pentaxreview.com

I searched for ReviewPost in the forum (SMF) and nothing much comes up. So I thought perhaps I can comment something on the software and the integration with SMF1.1.2.

I was a bit reluctant of spending US$99 for a software that I am not sure of. After searching SMF for no or little use results…I google for it for more information.

I found out that there are MANY people using ReviewPost actually, and a very famous photography website that I know of is using ReviewPost as well (they have paid to remove the brand/copyright). So, with that I took the risk and ordered for my ReviewPost on last Friday night.

I received no download link of ReviewPost after waiting till Saturday noon. I decided to drop them an email and within 10 mins I got a reply saying that they have already emailed me the link to download the software 10 hours ago, and it might have been in my spam folder. Nevermind, they sent me a new link and username/login, and immediately I download, upload it to my server and installed it on my website.

Installation is pretty easy and straight forward. If you can install SMF manually, then you should not have problem installing ReviewPost.

Now, how about integration with SMF? ReviewPost is heavily made for vBulletin. You can see features in ReviewPost specifically for vB. Luckily, SMF is supported as well, from version 1.05 and above. During the installation, just read the lines carefully and select SMF as the the user database. You will need to provide your SMF database login info during the installation.

After setting everything up in about 15 mins, I can start running ReviewPost. However, login/logout seems to have some issue. I checked and it is the Cookies setting.

There are setting for Cookies in ReviewPost. You need to set the correct SMF Cookies (SMFCookie463) and also specify that ReviewPost is using the same cookies as well.

Then login/logout should be working fine.

However, I notice that the login page seems to have problem. I have some errors (4 warning lines) on the login page at ReviewPost:

  • Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/pentaxkk/public_html/reviews/pp-inc.php on line 3253
  • Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/pentaxkk/public_html/reviews/pp-inc.php on line 3256
  • Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/pentaxkk/public_html/reviews/forums/smf.php on line 359
  • Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/pentaxkk/public_html/reviews/forums/smf.php on line 362

and the login page is not showing the default theme properly. :(

I have dropped them a support request in ReviewPost forum, hopefully they will answer it soon. I suspect it to be some integration conflict with SMF 1.1.2 or mySQL version issue. Still, users can still login without problem.

Talking about theme integration, this is the best part! If you already have a specific theme for your SMF and want to use it for ReviewPost, just select to use SMF forum theme, and viola! Your ReviewPost is having the EXACT same theme as your forum within seconds! :D

Wrote too much, here’s my PentaxReview site:

http://pentaxworld.com/reviews/

http://pentaxreview.com

There is a Header and Footer pages for you to add a html header and footer to your Reviews website in the admin of ReviewPost. Very simply, just design and copy and paste the html codes from your frontpage or any html editor.

(I am thinking of whether to install this review system to PhotoMalaysia or not…which means spending another US$99 for the license fee. At PentaxWorld, I received enough donation for the software, but for PhotoMalaysia, the money I spent on annual server rental (US$1.5k) has still not yet come back… :’()

Decided…Toyota WISH!

Posted by KhoKing on Friday May 11, 2007 Under Computer / IT

My wife and I have decided on the car to get – Toyota WISH!

We have found a car from a Kyoto shop. Quite far from Hiroshima and I do not plan to go there to check out the car. I have contacted the seller (shop), and the president of the shop has sent me some photos of the car. Here are the front and back view of the car:

wish-01.jpg

wish-02.jpg

The car is nearly 3 years old (June 2004 registration) and has around 20,000km driving mileage. No accident/repair history (but the president told me the rear bumper has been repaired, small accident I guess…which I do not understand fully), comes with TV/DVD/Navigator (not sure if it is original Toyota, if so it will cost JPY150,000 new! Yes, I asked before in a Toyota shop).

Though previously I thought of NOT getting WISH, but then I can’t find another car that I like…personally I do not like to get Oddysey anymore, as the new version is too expensive while the older version (design) is not to my liking.

I like WISH more and more after giving some thought about it.

1. 1800 cc engine means quite low fuel consumption and low roadtax.

2. 7 seaters car. When I need the spaces for passengers, it can sure accommodate them. My 2nd sister and her husband, and my elder sister might be coming to visit me in Japan end of this year or next year, together with my wife, my coming baby (June 2007) and myself, there are 6 person already. A normal sedan might be too tight and small for all. So this WISH is just nice!

3. I think the deal I found for the WISH above is quite good price. I have to pay JPY1,100,000 to the shop, and perhaps add another JPY10 for insurance, tax and registration. Total should be still less than JP1,300,000. I actually have found another grey colour WISH at a local shop at where I live, but the price is very high at JPY1,680,000 (including everything, on the road). Without Navigator or TV or DVD or Radio (empty), though only a year old car with 3000km mileage, but the price is too much of what I would like to pay. My wife do not like the price as well.

4. WISH selling price in Japan is JPY1,8xx,xxx. Meaning that when I brought it back to Malaysia next year, Malaysia tax will be based on that selling price. As compared to Oddysey which original selling price is over JPY2millions, I think I will not have to pay high tax for the WISH.

5. My father said WISH is too common in Malaysia, no point buying. However, I think common car is good, no so eye catching and will not be a target of thief or robber, though I still have to be careful when back to Malaysia as it is still consider a better than average (or luxury) car.

Today, I will go and pay the money to the shop for the WISH car. Still need to go and settle the car parking thing, as need to find and rent a car park before I can go register the WISH under myname. The shop will send the car to my place.

Hopefully by next week I will have a “brand new” car that I bought for my family! Thank God for providing me more than enough (overwhelming GRACE!).

Good night… :)

Microsoft to buy Yahoo for US$50 Billions?

Posted by KhoKing on Tuesday May 8, 2007 Under Computer / IT

microsoft.gif yahoo.gif

I read an interesting news at lowyat.net:

http://www.lowyat.net/v2/latest/is-yahoo-worth-us-50-billion-2.html

Microsoft set into motion the next step of their plan in which they hope to eventually dominate the search and advertising by first making an offer to with Yahoo for a possible acquisition that could be worth $50 billion, according to a report from Forbes. This move is possibly a reaction to the increasing pressure Microsoft is facing to effectively compete in the online advertising space, even more so after the largely publicized bidding war recently between Microsoft and Google for DoubleClick, one of the internet advertising giants of today. Eventually, Google won and settled with DoubleClick for roughly $3.1 billion. What’s more, Yahoo had recently announced its acquisition of online advertising firm Right Media for $680 million. While US$680 Million is chump change compared to the US$3.1 Billion Google spent on DoubleClick, the move showed that Yahoo was willing to invest in becoming, and in fact already is a significant presence in online advertising. Of course, there’s also the issue of the market in the search industry. With Microsoft currently sitting in third place behind Yahoo and Google, the successful acquisition of Yahoo by Microsoft would give Google the first really significant threat in a long time.

Personal Comments:

As an internet user, I use Google on my daily search nowadays. I use Gmail as my main email. I use Analytics for my website statistics. I use Products (previously Froogle) for my online store. I use Sitemap for google to take a more details look of my sites. I use Google Earth for searching of maps and location of a place.

I was an Adsense user, until they banned me… :’(

Google has dominated my internet life. Microsoft and Yahoo are both facing the pressure, they are loosing out market share daily…and Google stock has gone higher and higher.

Is Yahoo worth US$50 billions? Hmm…initially I thought that would be a bit cheap, as Yahoo is a company as of similar status as Google. The potential is huge.

However, on a second thought…do you need US$50 billions to setup another Google? If you have the idea, or use the US$50 billions investment, you might be able to create another Google…or you might not. I don’t think I am smart enough for that… :P

Page Rank 4!!!

Posted by KhoKing on Tuesday May 1, 2007 Under Computer / IT, Photography

Google has ranked ShaShinKi.com as a Page Rank 4 website now!

It was still Page Rank 3 last month and many months before. I remember it has a mixed of Page Rank 3 and 4 few months ago, but suddenly drops to all Page Rank 3 one or two months ago. Two days ago, it has a mixed of PR3 and PR4 again, but weighted more towards PR3 (so average still a PR3 site).

Just a few minutes ago, I checked again with 43 unique datacenter of Google and it has FULL PR4 ranking! Where do I checked?

http://oy-oy.eu/google/pr/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fshashinki.com

ShaShinKi Page Rank 4

Hurray!!!

What is PageRank?

Here’s a quote from Wikipedia:

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of “measuring” its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E).

PageRank was developed at Stanford University by Larry Page (hence the name Page-Rank[1]) and Sergey Brin as part of a research project about a new kind of search engine. The project started in 1995 and led to a functional prototype, named Google, in 1998. Shortly after, Page and Brin founded Google Inc., the company behind the Google search engine. While just one of many factors which determine the ranking of Google search results, PageRank continues to provide the basis for all of Google’s web search tools.[2]

The name PageRank is a trademark of Google. The PageRank process has been patented (U.S. Patent 6,285,999 ). The patent is not assigned to Google but to Stanford University.

Rent a Shop?

Posted by KhoKing on Monday Apr 30, 2007 Under Computer / IT

I just designed and setup a new “test store” at:

http://www.ecmalaysia.com/shops/fashion/index.php

Installation is just an ease within 10 minutes, but customizing take some times. I have to change the colours to red/pink style to match the lady feeling.

Also did some changes:

1. Added Currency Selector at the top, removed Language Selector as only English language is being used.

2. Added Search box at the lower left column.

Should I rent out the shop?

Changed the banner to my own photo, and change the profile photo to my own photo. Will spend some time in future to make things better. :)

I am totally new to “blog”…hahaa…

Intel new processor 40% faster!

Posted by KhoKing on Friday Apr 20, 2007 Under Computer / IT

Just read about the news on Intel new processor which will be coming out end of this year that is going to be 40% faster than the current processor.

Intel logo

Intel Corp. said a new line of computer processors due out later this year will be about 40 percent faster than current chips when running computer games, videos and other heavy workloads. The world’s biggest microchip maker, which powers about 75 percent of computers, said the new Penryn processors will have the same basic design as current ones, but the circuitry will be 30 percent thinner — just 45 millionths of a millimeter wide.

“In high-performance computing and bandwidth intensive applications … there will be up to a whopping 45 percent performance increase,” said Patrick Gelsinger, the general manager for Intel’s digital enterprise group. The Penryn would be the world’s first 45 nanometer processor, Gelsinger said at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing on Tuesday. The new processors will hit the market later this year, but Gelsinger did not provide a timeline.

In a prototype Penryn chip with four processing cores, that translated into 40 percent faster performance in computer games and video processing, while more mundane tasks such as image processing ran about 15 percent faster, Gelsinger said.

STOPPED: Hoya Pentax merge

Posted by KhoKing on Tuesday Apr 10, 2007 Under Computer / IT, Photography

Pentax has stopped their previous plan of merging (or rather being eaten) with Hoya.

Pentax president resigned and replaced with a new one.

Pentax DSLR and lenses are selling like hot cakes!

Hoya plan and negotiating a buyout bid of Pentax.

Will Pentax sell their money making division to Hoya? Unlikely…

SMF 2.0 Alpha

Posted by KhoKing on Tuesday Apr 10, 2007 Under Computer / IT

My currently favorite forum software, SMF (Simple Machines Forum) has announced the soon to be released SMF 2.0 Alpha to the Chartered members in June 2007, and general public in Oct 2007! Current public version is SMF 1.1.2, hence jump to SMF 2.0 means there should be a huge change and improvement from the current version!

SMF 2.0 Alpha

Grudge from SMF has announced some new features of the version 2.0 at:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=163438

Among some of the new features are:

  • Database abstraction – with support for PostgreSQL and SQLite planned alongside that of MySQL.
  • Automatic installation of packages into themes other than just the default.
  • Email templates to simplify customization of forum emails.
  • Moderation center including post, topic and attachment moderation – to allow approving of user content before it is made public.
  • User warning system.
  • Additional group functionally including group moderators and requestable/free assignable groups.
  • WYSIWYG editor to provide an intuitive user interface to those users not familiar with BBC.
  • Permission improvements such as group inheritance and permission profiles to further reduce the complexity of the permissions system.
  • File based caching for a performance increase on all forums regardless of whether an accelerator is installed.
  • Mail queuing system to stagger the sending of emails to improve performance on large forums.
  • Advanced signature settings to allow the administrator of a forum to more tightly control the contents of users signatures.
  • Personal messaging improvements including ability to automatically sort incoming messages and a variety of display options.
  • Improved upgrade script with better timeout protection and simpler user interface.
  • Custom profile fields to enable administrators to add additional member fields from the administration center.

For some who are not familiar with SMF, it is a free public forum software that is similar to the popular vBulletin and Invision Power Board, but it is FREE! :D

I have installed and use SMF on some of my websites:

LIFE magazine ends production…

Posted by KhoKing on Monday Apr 9, 2007 Under Computer / IT, Photography

Just read the news that LIFE Magazine will end their print production and with last issue on 20th April 2007. It is a sad news for an old time long history magazine… :(

With more and more information going online, less people buy hardcopy magazine nowadays. Still, National Geographic, Reader Digests…etc. are still able to attract readers into subscribing to them. Survival of the strongest…google boom out in just very short time, nobody (maybe only two) will believe that there is still room for another company to challenge Yahoo and MSN…but google has created the myth…and an example of there is no impossible…and we can even challenge and turn over google in future as well!

Dreams on! ;)

my new site…

Posted by KhoKing on Tuesday Apr 3, 2007 Under Computer / IT, Photography

I have created a “news” page some time ago…but did not manage it properly. Have created two online forums since then (PentaxWorld & CaptureSG), so I will leave the photography news update to these two sites, besides my PhotoMalaysia site.

So, what is this “blog” is all about? I am not really sure…that’s why I don’t know what title to put yet…and use the URL as blog under ShaShinKi. I guess I will just use this blog as my personally diary. Writing and sharing anything that I feel like writing.

Till then…see ya… :)
