Amazing Grace

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That savd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relievd;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believd!

Thro many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promisd good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who calld me here below,
Will be forever mine.

“Amazing Grace” Lyrics

Amazing Grace (How sweet the sound)
That sav’d a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev’d;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ’d!

Thro’ many dangers, toils and snare,
I have already come;
‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall profess, within the vail,
A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call’d me here below,
Will be for ever mine.

I first heard about this movie when I made my visit to UK in March. My sister told me about the movie, and I saw the poster of the movie on a bus in Glasgow.

The song is beautiful…and I am waiting for the DVD version to be released so that I can purchase it and watch together with my wife and friends.

Here’s the official site of the movie:

Nikon D200 Noise Comparison

Posted on May 29th, 2007 by KhoKing.
Categories: Photography.

This simple non-scientific test is just to give roughly an idea of how good or bad Nikon D200 is in NOISE CONTROL for different ISO shots. All shots are done handheld, hence focus might not be that accurate. No sharpening was applied, no correction in what so ever. All shots on Jpeg directly from D200, cropped to 100% to 700×700 pixels.

Lens used is Nikon Nikkor AIS 50mm F1.4.

Here’s the full view of the overall shot (ISO 100):

Received my WISH!

Posted on May 23rd, 2007 by KhoKing.
Categories: Family.

I have received my WISH yesterday…yeah…only till now I have time to blog about it. (Today is still Tuesday I assumed, thought more accurately I should say is Wednesday as already pass 12.25am midnight.)

The car came at around 3.30pm (Japan time) Monday (21st May 2007) at my place. Procedure is simple, signed the document and took the key. This is just the start…

My wife and I are very happy with the car. White colour, looks very new inside out! Outside is actually a bit dirty, due to the journey from Kyoto to Hiroshima I guess. It takes about 4~5 days to reach me, yeah…a bit long distance but I think because the transportation company needs to stop by every big city. Cost of transport is JPY 2,5000. Not really that expensive, or I should say cheap actually. There is another company quoting me JPY 70,000 for transportation when I ask about another car from their company in Tokyo!

Was very busy after receiving the car. Went to City Office trying to do the temporary permit to drive the car to Hiroshima city the next day to change the name of the car, only then found out that I need to buy the Insurance first (Compulsory). So, went to the insurance company and discuss about the insurance.

To cut the long story short…I bought and settled the insurances (5 days ~ temporary for driving the car to Hiroshima tomorrow (Wednesday); 25 months compulsory insurance for car). Paid JPY 5,100 and JPY 31,xxx. Yeah, the 5 days insurance is EXPENSIVE!!! Also got the temporary pass from City Office today, with two car plates (front and back). There is a diagonal red line on the plates, very eye catching, to tell everybody that the car is NOT YET registered.

Have set the location of Transportation office in Hiroshima city into my car’s navigation system. Need to go there early morning…open from 8.30am~11.45am; 1pm~3.45pm. Hopefully can reach the place safely and get everything done smoothly in the morning. Pray to God to be with my wife and I and my baby. :)

Good night for now… z…z…z…

Yesterday we have a “baby shower” gathering at our English Bible cell group. It was really a big surprise, and this is the first time I heard about “baby shower”. Our baby received a lot of presents, thank you very much brothers and sisters!

The shower is not just for us, but also another couples in our cell group, Matt and Misty, who are ministering in Hiroshima City.

Two happy moms :) !

TMnet offering 4MB/s package! First and Only in Malaysia!

Posted on May 18th, 2007 by KhoKing.
Categories: Computer / IT.

I read about the news of TMnet now offering 4MB/s Streamyx package with an “introductory” price of RM198/month.

This is definitely a good news for Malaysians, with internet speed become faster and faster.

This is good for me as well, as if people are able to get online faster, speedier and easier, it will make shopping online at ShaShinKi.com a more pleasant experience!

However…now the not so good feedback…

I posted this news at PhotoMalaysia, and many members are complaining about the service of Streamyx. Their current 512KB and 1MB plans are crappy, not delivering the speed as stated. My sister in law in Perak is often having Streamyx down (1~3 times a month), and repair work normally take a few days. Refund? Yeah…if you do bother to write them a letter, wait for a few months…then they might compensate you for a few days discount of what you are paying monthly. I bet most will not bother to do that…and Streamyx is not loosing money by NOT DELIVERING their service.

So, people do not trust the 4MB/s package now…Streamyx should improve their current service (512KB/s and 1MB/s), instead of offering higher package to new customers. Or is Streamyx purposely reducing the speed of the current 512KB/s and 1MB/s performance to give way to the 4MB/s customers? Can their current infrastructure support and deliver 4MB/s speed?

I do hope internet service in Malaysia can improve significantly…hopefully more players can join in the ISP market (celcom, maxis…etc.).

I entered PhotoMalaysia May’s photo competition (Theme = RED) with the following photo. However, after discussion with Staffs, we have generally decided that Admins should not participate in the competitions, as it would look bad if by chance any Admins won the contest and the prize.

So, still need to give some light to the photo that I like…I show it here. :)

Got my car garage certificate from Police!

Posted on May 16th, 2007 by KhoKing.
Categories: Family.

Praise th Lord! My wife and I got our car’s garage certificate from the local police station without fuss today! :D

In Japan, if you want to own a white plate car (big car above 800cc if I am not mistaken), you need to prove that you have a garage/parking space for it before you are allowed to own the car. Yes, you can’t buy a car if you do not have a parking space, even if you have the money. You must first prove that you have a space to park your car.

Here’s what you need to do (sharing my experience now):

1. Find a parking space around you (Normally the house/room you rent should have a parking space offered, if not then you will have to rent from private parking space). Monthly rental can be from JPY2,000 to JPY15,000, depends on the location of where you are staying. For mine, I paid JPY2,000 for a urban area space.

2. Buy the needed documentations from the local police station. Cost is JPY50.

3. Bring the documentations to the parking space land lord, ask him/her to fill in the some of the needed informations. You might need to draw the map of where you live to the location of the parking space, cannot be more than 2km. You will also need to draft out the size of the parking space, making sure that your car can fit in (some Japanese parking space are very small, only for small car).

4. After filling in all the information stamp (inkan) from the landlord, you can now bring the documents to your local police station.

4.1 Oh…before I forget, you need to make sure that you have your own inkan (stamp) as well, if not then you will need to register one from the City Office. You must make sure that the inkan is having the name/alphabet same as your registered name as in your Alien card (yes, Japanese calls all foreigners “aliens”). I have bought a Kanji (Chinese character) inkan and got rejected. Have to make a inkan with “コー” sounds as “KO”. Inkan registration is easy, only takes 10 minutes.

4.2 Now assuming you have all the documents filled up, your inkan, JPY2000, now you can go to the police station and register your parking space.

5. You can’t get your parking certificate on the same day. You will need to go back to the Police Station on the 3rd day after you submitted your documents. Eg. submit on Monday, go collect on Wednesday. Prepare another JPY500 when collecting your certificate.

* There is no minimum period of rental for the parking space. You can rent it for a month, or two, or 3 or a year…as long as you can get the landlord fill up the form for you, then you are fine. Police will not require you to rent the same parking space for long. However, some landlord will require you to rent for a minimum period of time.

That should be it, not very difficult and you can actually do it yourself fairly easy. :) My next mission…get the car name changes to mine!

Today’s biggest news in the photography world: Amazon.com acquires dpreview.com!

I was quite surprised when I visited dpreview.com today and saw that headline news! Wow…how much did Amazon paid to Phil Askey? With millions of visitors and registered members, dpreview.com definitely worth a few million dollars! Very envy… :D

Here’s the official press release (I posted this at PentaxWorld.com as well):

AMAZON.COM ACQUIRES DPREVIEW.COM
THE LEADING ONLINE DESTINATION FOR REVIEWS
AND INFORMATION ABOUT DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

(BUSINESS WIRE) SEATTLE, WA—May 14, 2007—Leading online retailer Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced it has acquired www.dpreview.com, the web’s most comprehensive site for digital camera information and reviews. Founded in 1998 by Phil Askey, dpreview.com provides unbiased reviews and original content regarding the latest in digital cameras, and offers a host of features and forums designed to make it easy for consumers to find the camera that’s right for them. With its unique voice and in-depth technical reviews, dpreview.com draws millions of unique visitors each month.

“Dpreview.com is by far the most authoritative source anywhere for straight talk about new digital cameras,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “We at Amazon.com have been their fans for a long time, and we extend a big welcome to the dpreview.com team.”

“One of the difficulties of operating dpreview.com independently has been the balance between producing content and delivering new site features,” said Phil Askey, founder of dpreview.com. “Now, with the support of Amazon, I’ll be able to devote more of my time to expanding and improving our features – such as product reviews and discussion forums while still delivering the high-quality content that our readers have come to expect.”

Dpreview.com offers in-depth reviews of the latest digital cameras and accessories, active discussion forums, digital photography and imaging news, sample images, a dynamic digital camera buyers’ guide, side-by-side comparisons of the most popular models, and the web’s most comprehensive database of digital camera features and specifications.

Dpreview.com will continue to function as a stand-alone operation based in London.

After a day with ReviewPost…

Posted on May 14th, 2007 by KhoKing.
Categories: Computer / IT, Photography.

Below are what I posted at Simple Machines forum, I think it would be useful for my future reference as well as to my visitors, so I copy and paste it here to share with you guys. :)

This article is all about having a review system on your website, here’s how it is in action:

http://pentaxworld.com/reviews/

http://pentaxreview.com

I searched for ReviewPost in the forum (SMF) and nothing much comes up. So I thought perhaps I can comment something on the software and the integration with SMF1.1.2.

I was a bit reluctant of spending US$99 for a software that I am not sure of. After searching SMF for no or little use results…I google for it for more information.

I found out that there are MANY people using ReviewPost actually, and a very famous photography website that I know of is using ReviewPost as well (they have paid to remove the brand/copyright). So, with that I took the risk and ordered for my ReviewPost on last Friday night.

I received no download link of ReviewPost after waiting till Saturday noon. I decided to drop them an email and within 10 mins I got a reply saying that they have already emailed me the link to download the software 10 hours ago, and it might have been in my spam folder. Nevermind, they sent me a new link and username/login, and immediately I download, upload it to my server and installed it on my website.

Installation is pretty easy and straight forward. If you can install SMF manually, then you should not have problem installing ReviewPost.

Now, how about integration with SMF? ReviewPost is heavily made for vBulletin. You can see features in ReviewPost specifically for vB. Luckily, SMF is supported as well, from version 1.05 and above. During the installation, just read the lines carefully and select SMF as the the user database. You will need to provide your SMF database login info during the installation.

After setting everything up in about 15 mins, I can start running ReviewPost. However, login/logout seems to have some issue. I checked and it is the Cookies setting.

There are setting for Cookies in ReviewPost. You need to set the correct SMF Cookies (SMFCookie463) and also specify that ReviewPost is using the same cookies as well.

Then login/logout should be working fine.

However, I notice that the login page seems to have problem. I have some errors (4 warning lines) on the login page at ReviewPost:

  • Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/pentaxkk/public_html/reviews/pp-inc.php on line 3253
  • Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/pentaxkk/public_html/reviews/pp-inc.php on line 3256
  • Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/pentaxkk/public_html/reviews/forums/smf.php on line 359
  • Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/pentaxkk/public_html/reviews/forums/smf.php on line 362

and the login page is not showing the default theme properly. :(

I have dropped them a support request in ReviewPost forum, hopefully they will answer it soon. I suspect it to be some integration conflict with SMF 1.1.2 or mySQL version issue. Still, users can still login without problem.

Talking about theme integration, this is the best part! If you already have a specific theme for your SMF and want to use it for ReviewPost, just select to use SMF forum theme, and viola! Your ReviewPost is having the EXACT same theme as your forum within seconds! :D

Wrote too much, here’s my PentaxReview site:

http://pentaxworld.com/reviews/

http://pentaxreview.com

There is a Header and Footer pages for you to add a html header and footer to your Reviews website in the admin of ReviewPost. Very simply, just design and copy and paste the html codes from your frontpage or any html editor.

(I am thinking of whether to install this review system to PhotoMalaysia or not…which means spending another US$99 for the license fee. At PentaxWorld, I received enough donation for the software, but for PhotoMalaysia, the money I spent on annual server rental (US$1.5k) has still not yet come back… :’()

Just Online! PentaxReview.com!

I just setup a review section at PentaxWorld:

http://pentaxworld.com/reviews/

Purchased a review software that costs PentaxWorld US$99.00, set it up yesterday and starts running it almost fully now. :)

I quite like the software, so thinking that instead of having it just under PentaxWorld, which not get much attention, why not register a domain with easier and clearer name that every Pentax users can remember easily?! Checked PentaxReview.com and it is still available, just registered it few hours ago and Stealth it to PentaxWorld.com/reviews/ now. :)

Perhaps I should designed a LOGO for it? :D

Paid…confirmed!

Went to pay the money of “MY” Toyota WISH yesterday (Friday). JPY1,100,000 (1.1 million yen). According to the shop, they need a week to do inspection on the car and arrangement for transportation.

At the mean time I still need to find a parking space to rent for my car. I have contacted a friend of mine, and his house lord should be able to rent me the parking space, which is around 1km away from where I live. So, still within the 2km perimeter rule. Hopefully tomorrow can meet the house lord and get the rental thing settled.

Let me share another photo of my car… :D

Decided…Toyota WISH!

Posted on May 11th, 2007 by KhoKing.
Categories: Computer / IT.

My wife and I have decided on the car to get - Toyota WISH!

We have found a car from a Kyoto shop. Quite far from Hiroshima and I do not plan to go there to check out the car. I have contacted the seller (shop), and the president of the shop has sent me some photos of the car. Here are the front and back view of the car:

wish-01.jpg

wish-02.jpg

The car is nearly 3 years old (June 2004 registration) and has around 20,000km driving mileage. No accident/repair history (but the president told me the rear bumper has been repaired, small accident I guess…which I do not understand fully), comes with TV/DVD/Navigator (not sure if it is original Toyota, if so it will cost JPY150,000 new! Yes, I asked before in a Toyota shop).

Though previously I thought of NOT getting WISH, but then I can’t find another car that I like…personally I do not like to get Oddysey anymore, as the new version is too expensive while the older version (design) is not to my liking.

I like WISH more and more after giving some thought about it.

1. 1800 cc engine means quite low fuel consumption and low roadtax.

2. 7 seaters car. When I need the spaces for passengers, it can sure accommodate them. My 2nd sister and her husband, and my elder sister might be coming to visit me in Japan end of this year or next year, together with my wife, my coming baby (June 2007) and myself, there are 6 person already. A normal sedan might be too tight and small for all. So this WISH is just nice!

3. I think the deal I found for the WISH above is quite good price. I have to pay JPY1,100,000 to the shop, and perhaps add another JPY10 for insurance, tax and registration. Total should be still less than JP1,300,000. I actually have found another grey colour WISH at a local shop at where I live, but the price is very high at JPY1,680,000 (including everything, on the road). Without Navigator or TV or DVD or Radio (empty), though only a year old car with 3000km mileage, but the price is too much of what I would like to pay. My wife do not like the price as well.

4. WISH selling price in Japan is JPY1,8xx,xxx. Meaning that when I brought it back to Malaysia next year, Malaysia tax will be based on that selling price. As compared to Oddysey which original selling price is over JPY2millions, I think I will not have to pay high tax for the WISH.

5. My father said WISH is too common in Malaysia, no point buying. However, I think common car is good, no so eye catching and will not be a target of thief or robber, though I still have to be careful when back to Malaysia as it is still consider a better than average (or luxury) car.

Today, I will go and pay the money to the shop for the WISH car. Still need to go and settle the car parking thing, as need to find and rent a car park before I can go register the WISH under myname. The shop will send the car to my place.

Hopefully by next week I will have a “brand new” car that I bought for my family! Thank God for providing me more than enough (overwhelming GRACE!).

Good night… :)
